VITA Updates

Tax Help Utah – the VITA free tax program - has completed analysis of 2019 Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) results for Utah. Utah’s participation rate is still at the 75% range, meaning 1 out of 4 people eligible for EITC are not claiming it. This year's efforts are around education and awareness. Each tax season, up to 30% of EITC filers are getting EITC for the first time. How many others are not aware of it? Some people are not required to file if their earnings are less than the standard deduction. Many of our clients have money stress so if tax time is one more stress point and the government tells me I don’t have to file, I say thanks!

Not many people are thinking of taxes before Thanksgiving, but the team at United Way Utah County have booked over 30 early appointments by training Head Start personnel on our appointment scheduling system. They are using the same approach with the Sub for Santa program. Sign up for the program AND make a tax appointment!

University of Utah Department of Family and Consumer Studies will initiate a pilot program to do taxes through their work at low-income health clinics. The proposal is based on a tax program started at a pediatric clinic in Boston, Ma.  Six states have adopted this program and we hope to be the seventh. Our goal is to expand to every low-income health clinic in Utah. Check out the 4 minute video.

All Regions are beginning to or are in the middle of getting ready for tax season 2020. Please support them and please support the program.
