UNA - Cancel Culture and Bridging Toward Belonging in Progressive Organizations

Thursday, September 25, 2025
9:00 am11:00 am

Progressive organizations working on social justice issues face unique challenges during these turbulent times as they navigate external and internal barriers to their work. While external barriers around funding, resources, the socio-political climate, and policy shifts will continue to exist for nonprofits, it’s the compounding internal challenges related to cancel culture within their organizations, movements, and coalitions that are leading to toxic workplaces, burnout, and turnover.

This workshop will unpack how progressive organizations face these additional and/or different challenges and what staff can do to create a thriving organization of belonging where they can focus on their mission-oriented work and make a bigger impact. Using Maurice Mitchell’s Building Resilient Organizations article as a guide, we will reflect on how specific barriers to belonging related to cancel culture might be showing up in our organizations and identify actions to better navigate these challenges.

Learning Objectives:

Unpack how cancel culture in progressive organizations is eroding the effectiveness and impact of their mission-driven work, and why a workplace culture of belonging is important to cultivate
Reflect on how specific barriers to belonging related to cancel culture might be showing up in our organizations
Identify actions to better navigate these challenges
