The Formerly Homeless Board at the Utah NAHRO Chapter Conference

The Formerly Homeless Board of Utah were guest panelists at Utah’s NAHRO conference in St. George during April 2022. The board members from left to right Stephan Prokay (St. George), Nancy Griggs (Ogden), Shailey Ovard, Chair (SLC), Timothy Boone (0gden), and Katheryne Novick (St. George).

From overcoming homelessness, to passionately giving back to the community, The Formerly Homeless Board of Utah is here to advocate on homeless issues, to participate in the fight to end homelessness, and to actively engage within our homeless community to help make homelessness in Utah Rare, Brief and Non-recurring.

Besides NAHRO they have been asked to present at the CAP UTAH conference in 2021 and 2022, the Utah State Homeless Summit, SL Library discussions, and on various LHC boards and Utah Homeless Network committees.

This is a critical voice in combating the roots causes and best solutions for those experiencing homelessness in Utah. One common theme discussed was childhood trauma or abuse that lead to self-medicating and each member felt this was common in the community of those experiencing homelessness. There was some very good conversation between school representatives, affordable housing advocates, and the formerly homeless board.

Please contact Chair Shailey Ovard at ovardshailey@yahoo.com if you know someone formerly homeless who would like to be part of this board or to request their participation
