Small Actions, Big Impact: Your 2025 Fight Poverty Checklist

As we begin 2025, many of us are setting personal goals and resolutions. But what if we could transform those individual aspirations into meaningful actions that lift our entire community? At Community Action Partnership of Utah, we believe that small, consistent actions can create significant change. That's why we've created this monthly checklist of achievable actions to help you make a difference in fighting poverty throughout 2025.

Your Month-by-Month Guide to Making a Difference

January: Understand Poverty in Your Community

Start the year by gaining deeper insight into poverty's impact on your neighbors. Attend a Poverty Simulation to experience the daily challenges faced by families in poverty, or research local poverty statistics. Understanding is the first step to creating change.

February: Engage with Legislation

Get involved with the legislative process during Utah's legislative session. Learn about poverty-related bills, connect with your representatives, and make your voice heard on issues that affect our community.

March: Support Tax Assistance

Help spread the word about free tax preparation services (VITA). These services ensure families receive all eligible credits and deductions, potentially providing crucial financial relief.

April: Give Your Time

National Volunteer Month is the perfect time to explore volunteer opportunities at your local Community Action Agency. Whether you can offer a few hours or a regular commitment, your time and skills can make a real difference in program delivery and community support.

May: Be a Resource Connector

During Community Action Month, familiarize yourself with the programs available through your local Community Action Agency. Share this information with people who might benefit. Sometimes, the biggest barrier to receiving help is simply not knowing what's available.

June: Bridge the Digital Divide

Learn about digital inclusion initiatives and share information about internet access resources. In today's world, digital access is crucial for education, employment, and connecting with essential services.

July: Address Summer Challenges

Summer can be particularly difficult for families experiencing poverty. Share information about summer meal programs and cooling assistance. These programs help ensure children have access to nutrition when school is out and families stay safe during heat waves.

August: Support Early Education

As the school year begins, learn about Head Start programs in your area. Early childhood education is crucial for breaking the cycle of poverty, and spreading awareness helps more families access these vital services.

September: Take Action Against Hunger

During Hunger Action Month, deepen your understanding of local food assistance systems. Learn the difference between food banks and food pantries, and find out how you can support both effectively.

October: Promote Energy Efficiency

As temperatures drop, learn about weatherization and energy assistance programs that help families manage utility costs. Share this information with neighbors who might benefit from these services.

November: Address Housing Insecurity

Research housing assistance programs and tenant rights in your community. Housing stability is fundamental to escaping poverty, and knowledge of available resources can help prevent homelessness.

December: Consider Meaningful Giving

End the year by considering how your holiday giving can create lasting impact. Research programs that fight poverty in your community and consider making a year-end contribution to support their work.

Remember, you don't have to do everything at once. Choose the actions that align with your capacity and interests. Even completing a few items on this checklist can make a meaningful difference in your community.
